This afternoon finds me at Horizon High Schools Athletic Training room , one of my old stomping grounds, with a good friend, Nick Stein. I spent 5 great years as the Athletic Trainer at Horizon before starting FITLIFE. Nick is the Head Athletic Trainer at his alma matter and a busy guy. He is responsible for the well being of over 400 student athletes. With the end of the football season he has a little more breathing room although basketball, soccer and wrestling are just getting started. Nick is always on the run, but was kind enough to catch up for a few minutes.
I first met Nick when he was sophomore playing baseball for the Huskies. He came to FITLIFE to prepare for the upcoming baseball season utilizing our PASSS program. PASSS is an acronym for Power, Agility, Strength, Speed and Stability. It was evident from the beginning that Nick was destined to become one of Horizon’s best all around baseball players, setting the vertical jump record at FITLIFE. As a starting outfielder his senior year, the Huskies finished runner up in the State Championship game losing to Desert Ridge and their pitching Ace, current Diamondback player Jake Barrett.
After High School Nick went on to become a Division III 2 time All-American at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While at Coe, Nick worked with the Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Wrestling, Soccer and Track & Field teams while playing baseball. That’s an unreal commitment to become an Athletic Trainer! He received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Athletic Training from Coe in 2013, passed his National Athletic Trainers Certification Examination the same year and today holds an Arizona License in Athletic Training. Using his Athletic Training degree, Nick returned to FITLIFE as a staff member and worked with athletes for 6 months helping them improve their athleticism and recover from injury.
He left FITLIFE to pursue his current position at Horizon by accepting an offer from Select Physical Therapy. Select contracts with the Paradise Valley Unified School District to place Athletic Trainer’s in all 5 high schools. It’s great having a continued relationship with Nick as we work with Horizon Volleyball and Baseball players. As many of you have now figured out Nick’s sister Ashley is on staff at FITLIFE as a Strength and Conditioning coach.
It was fun to drop by the Athletic Training room today to catch up with Nick! He was busy helping a few female soccer players so our time was cut a little short. Nick does an excellent job at Horizon and is well respected by administrators, coaches, parents and athletes. They are fortunate to have him!
I hope you enjoyed meeting another friend of mine and a well respected colleague. Have a safe and healthy weekend!
