2019 5A State Champions Horizon Baseball back to the grind!

Returning Husky Baseball players

On Thursday May 14th, 2019 the Horizon Baseball Team began playing for the 5A State Championship at Tempe Diablo Stadium, and some 5 hours and 35 minutes later they prevailed in possibly the best high school baseball game ever played in Arizona. Horizon High School wins 5A State Championship!

This 16 inning gem was incredible to watch as the Huskies and their opponent from Nogales displayed talent, grit, focus and endurance as they played an almost flawless game that was close from the opening pitch. For many fans that night it probably came as a surprise, but not to me. I have been around this program for almost 25 years and the players and coaches put in an incredible amount of time throughout the year beginning in late August and ending each following May.

This year is no different for the returning State Champs. On Tuesday September 3rd approximately 55 players met me in the clubhouse at Husky Park. Our fall training program was beginning again and the guys were ready to get started. With normal August afternoon temperatures in the 100’s the returning players knew what was about to happen as they began Phase I of Endurance training lasting 90 minutes. The new players were about to find out what this program is all about. I have designed the format of this training for twice a week with 9 upper-class men leading a group of 6-7 of their peers in a fall baseball strength and conditioning program.  The leadership they provide is fantastic and since players from Freshman to Seniors participate program chemistry is excellent.

Phase I ended last week and we have moved onto Phase II or Strength Training. Every 5 weeks a new phase will be introduced and continue until tryouts begin in early February.  I truly look forward to these Tuesday/Thursday afternoons because of these impressive young men. They enjoy hanging out with each other and work very hard to become better athletes and teammates. I guess that’s why they can play an almost perfect baseball game for 5 1/2 hours in a high stress state championship and end it with a ring!

Congratulations to last years players, coaches, administrators and parents and good luck this year. No matter what happens your hard work will not go unnoticed by me.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about a program that FITLIFE has been involved in for over 20 years. Have a safe and healthy weekend.
