FITLIFE Visits With Orthopedic Surgeon, Angelo Mattalino

Today, a long time friend and associate dropped by for a few minutes to catch up. Dr. Angelo Mattalino, Othopedic surgeon and pivotal person in the beginning of FITLIFE Health Systems, Inc. Angelo was my team physician at Horizon High School in 1996 and friend of my past business partner, Dan Wright AT. They knew each other through professional baseball connections. Separately, we both confided in Dr. Mattalino our desire to advance professionally and he is responsible for introducing the two of us.  Dan and I both told him that we had similar thoughts about  beginninga start up business involving Athletic Trainers. At the time, I was working for Lincoln Institute for Sports Medicine and Dan was working out of a personal training gym in the Scottsdale Airpark.  He facilitated a meeting between all of us and 3 months later FITLIFE was up and running!

Dr. Mattalino and I first met in 1987 when he joined an orthopedic group in Phoenix that was highly involved at the Lincoln Institute for Sports Medicine.  He was very interested in helping both athletes and athletic trainers and volunteered countless hours as team physician for multiple high schools and was responsible for placing athletic trainers in the Scottsdale Unified School District.  He left the group after a few years to begin Southwest Sports Medicine which focused on treatment of athletes from all sports, but primarily on baseball. His love of baseball brought him to the valley of the sun and he has flourished in the sport ever since.

Dr. Mattalino’s storied career includes being the Head Team Physician for the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Organization from 1997-2002,  Medical Director/Orthopedic Surgeon for the ATP Tennis Tournament in Scottsdale and Orthopedic consultant for both USA baseball and the Arizona Fall League from 1991 to present. He has extensively traveled with USA Baseball attending the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008!

Angelo has an exceptional eductional background in orthopedic medicine. He received his medical degree in 1982 from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas, completed his residency at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and an Orthopedic Flexible Internship at New Orleans Charity Hospital.  He then completed Fellowships under two of the most prominent Orthopedic Physicians in the country. His first, Elbow and Arthroscopic Surgery & Sports Medicine Shoulder with the world renown Dr. James R. Andrews of the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL. The second with the esteemed Dr. J.R. Steadman of Tahoe Fracture and Orthopedic Medicine Clinic in South Lake Tahoe, CA where the focus was on Sports Medicine & Knee Surgery.

Over the years Dr. Mattalino has referred many of his clients to FITLIFE for which I am eternally grateful for. In the beginning of our business Dan and I sought out many of our contacts for assistance and none came through to the extent of Dr. Mattalino. He strongly believes in the profession of Athletic Training and understands how the services we deliver are beneficial to his patients.

Today, you can find him busy running his private practice, Mattalino Orthopedics located at the Biltmore Medical Park. His professional approach to orthopedic medicine is appreciated by his patients, physical therapist and athletic trainers valley wide.

I hope you enjoyed meeting another person who has a big impact on FITLIFE and the valley sports medicine community. Have a safe and healthy weekend!
