FITLIFE with Bill Brown, PT, ATC, SCS at TOCA Physical Therapy in Scottsdale

Bill Brown PT and John Neel AT

Last week I was out of town and unable to post to wish you all a Happy New Year.  I hope everyone had a safe and healthy start and are looking forward to 2018.  I know I am! It has been a great start for me on this Friday afternoon by spending some time with one of my best friends, Bill Brown.  Bill and I met in 1985 when I was hired as an athletic trainer at the Lincoln Institute for Sports Medicine and have been close ever since.

Bill and I hit it off right away while working at John C Lincoln (JCL) , sharing our love for the Big Ten and high school sports.  Since moving here in 1981, he has had an amazing career in the Valley of the Sun and knows just about everyone in Scottsdale.  Of course, I am joking, but if you spend enough time with him I guarantee you will know someone in common. I call it six degrees of separation from Bill Brown.

Anyway, as I said before he is a Hawkeye through and through and bleeds Black and Gold. In fact, if you are referred to physical therapy at his office in North Scottsdale you will see a Hawkeye banner proudly displayed in the treatment area.  Bill received his Bachelors of Science and Certificate in Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa.  He also received his Clinical Specialists in Sports Physical Therapy from the APTA in 1989 rounding out his education. As most of you already know I am an Indiana Hoosier we typically have our way with the Hawkeyes on the hard wood, but get throttled on the turf! We spent many Saturday afternoons in the fall at Bills watching the Iowa play another Big 10 opponent, usually his wife Susan’s beloved Michigan Wolverines.

As I said, Bill really does know many of the Valley Sports Medicine pioneers here in Phoenix and was one of the early providers of care to high school athletes.  He was hired by the late Dr. Paul Steingard to provide athletic training coverage to high school athletes from the Glendale Unified School District in 1980.  Dr. Steingard, founder of the Center for Sports Medicine and former team Physician of the Phoenix Suns was a true believer in the profession of athletic training and was instrumental in placing AT’s in area high schools.  After his stint with Dr. Steingard Bill spent 8 years with JCL – Instititute for Sports Medicine where he stayed active in the area high schools by volunteering his services at both Phoenix Christian and Scottsdale Coronado High School.  I spent a few Friday nights under the lights helping Bill with sideline coverage.

Bill left JCL in 1987 to begin a journey in the world of private practice which he successfully managed for 23 years until finally selling his practice and joining TOCA. Today, Bill treats his patients and manages his staff with a friendly smile and infectious laugh. He is an excellent physical therapist and his body of work attests to that fact. He has positively touched many people around the valley and continues helping patients get better every day.

All of us here at FITLIFE say many thanks for his support by referring his patients over the years.  I am truly blessed to have Bill as a friend and mentor and can say that my life here in the desert is better for having him in it.

I hope you have enjoyed meeting another one of my many friends.  Have a safe and healthy weekend!

  1. I whole heartedly agree with your description of Bill Brown who has been a personal friend for many years, even though my husband, Ray bleeds maze and blue/Michigan and I am an Ohio State Buckeye.
