On Thursday May 14th, 2019 the Horizon Baseball Team began playing for the 5A State Championship at Tempe Diablo Stadium, and some 5 hours and 35 minutes later they prevailed in possibly the best high school baseball game ever played in Arizona. Today it’s a beautiful 75 degree day in centerfield where Anton Mackey is leading a yoga class of 65 players from the Horizon High School Baseball team. This is the 6th straight year that he has been instructing a 1 hour Vinyasa class for the program in the month of January, and it’s seriously the highlight of their off season training! On Wednesday afternoon from 12pm-1pm I get to spend an hour with our awesome Yoga instructor, Angella Tortorici. Angella has been teaching this Vinyassa class for almost two years and it’s always a good challenge for both the mind and body. Stretching. Something basically all athletic trainers, personal trainers, coaches, physicians and fitness enthusiasts say you should do, right? But really…why does it matter? Well after reading through today’s post you’ll have some answers.
Static, ballistic, active, passive, dynamic, PNF and fascial are all types of stretching techniques. How many have you heard of? Do you know the difference? Most people have heard of a few and are confused as to why there are so many as they just want to be flexible. Well today we are going to breakdown the basics of each type so hopefully you can be.
Is yoga for more than just flexibility? The short answer is, of course, YES. But what else can and does yoga enhance?
This has become too complicated of a question and a plethora of exercise training programs are out there. Circut Training, Weightlifing, Running, Cycling, Boxing, Zumba, CrossFit, Yoga, etc. You name it, it exists. It can be hard to navigate understanding which type of exercise is right for you or what you might be interested in doing. So start by asking yourself a few questions…
